Boating Myth vs Reality

There’s a lot of romantic imagery about life on the water — but here’s what really happens.

Myth: Life on the water is always peaceful.
Reality: There are plenty of tranquil moments, but you’ll also face strong winds, lock queues, low bridges, and the occasional stubborn engine.

Myth: Bigger boats are always better.
Reality: Bigger boats can mean more comfort, but they’re harder to manoeuvre, have higher running costs, and need more maintenance.

Myth: You don’t need much boating knowledge.
Reality: Understanding navigation, safety, and maintenance makes your trip smoother and can save you from expensive (and stressful) mistakes.

Myth: It’s all about summer cruising.
Reality: Year-round boating can be rewarding — autumn colours and crisp winter mornings — but also demands more preparation, especially for heating and insulation.

Myth: Technology has replaced traditional skills.
Reality: GPS and apps are great, but paper maps, a compass, and knot-tying skills still have their place when tech fails.
